Intelligence sources say that most of the people are present from the western and southern provinces.
According to intelligence agencies, a son of an underworld criminal involved in drug trafficking in Dematagoda is running for the Colombo Municipal Council from a major political party, and a son of an underworld criminal who has fled the country and is staying in Dubai is contesting for the Dehiwala Mountain Municipal Council from a major political party.
The Criminal Investigation Department has started investigations against both these underworld criminals for money laundering and it is also special that both the sons of the underworld criminals have been caught by the police.
In addition, a multi-day yacht owner who was arrested by the Police Narcotics Bureau and is on bail for bringing hundreds of kilos of drugs into Sri Lanka is also running for the Balapitiya Regional Council. He is also contesting from a major political party.
In addition, the intelligence agencies state that a strong drug trafficker staying in England as well as the children of an underworld strongman are contesting for the Colombo Municipal Council.
According to intelligence agencies, more than 2000 people involved in the underworld and drug trafficking as well as other crimes, are contesting this time from political parties and independent groups.
