“If the PAYE tax is removed, the country will lose Rs. 100 billion” – President

“Mother Sri Lanka has come so far safely through this dangerous route. But the journey is not over yet.” President Ranil Wickramasinghe says.

He said this while presenting the policy statement at the start of the fourth session of the Ninth Parliament.

“These taxes were not imposed voluntarily. But we cannot build the country just by doing what we like. Do the right thing, even if you don’t want to. If the income tax is removed, the country will lose Rs. 100 billion. If the tax limit is raised to Rs. 200,000, the country will lose Rs. 63 billion. The total amount lost is Rs 163 billion. We are not in a place where we can lose this much of money…

It is challenging to live for all sectors of society. But if we endure this hardship for another 5 to 6 months, we can reach a solution. If we continue this way, we can give more allowances to government employees in the 3rd and 4th quarter of the year. Concessions can be given to the private sector. The people’s pockets of the whole country can be enriched than today. Employment can increase income sources. Bank interest can be reduced. In another three years, the people of the country will be able to get 75% more income than what they are getting today…” the President said.
