A strict order from above for government institutions that do not function as told

The Secretary of the Treasury has once again informed to strictly implement the circular issued by suspending non-essential expenses, including events, openings, and conferences held by government institutions.

National Budget Circular No. 3/2022 was issued on the 26th of April with the aim of strictly controlling government expenses and suspending the expenses incurred by government agencies for various events.

Despite government agencies being notified through several other circulars that they should not incur expenses related to festival activities, later it was reported that such expenses would continue to be incurred contrary to those rules.

Hence, the treasury’s Secretary, K. H. Mahinda Siriwardena, again gave this notification yesterday to all Ministry Secretaries, Provincial Council Chief Secretaries, Department Heads, District Secretaries, State Corporations, Companies and Statutory Board Heads, as well as State Bank Heads.

Under this, it has been reiterated that the expenses incurred by using the profits of the government or private institutions should be stopped for the purpose of holding all kinds of events, including the opening of government institutions, functions related to the assumption of duties and retirement of officials, friendly meetings, and receptions.
