An award ceremony was held by the Institute of Politics at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo last Thursday afternoon.
Former opposition leader and Member of Parliament Mr. R Sambandhan received the ‘Democracy Gold Award’ which is given only once in a lifetime to a senior political figure who dedicates himself to securing democracy.
Mrs. Rohini Kavirathna, Member of Parliament of Matale District from Samagi Jana Balawegaya, as the female Member of Parliament of the Year and Mr. Premanath C. Dolawatta, Member of Parliament of Colombo District from Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, as the male Member of Parliament of the Year received the awards.
Institute of politics is an institute for the study of governance, democracy and public policy and every year the institute conducts diploma courses and awards diplomas to those who pass it.
Along with the diploma ceremony, awards were also given to senior politicians annually.
There was an appreciation of outstanding politicians dedicated to the subjects of democracy and reconciliation and Mr. R. Sambandhan received the once-in-a-lifetime democracy gold award.
The organizers mentioned that the award was presented to appreciate Mr. Sambandhan’s commitment to democracy during his four decades of parliamentary career.
In the same way, Mrs. Rohini Kavirathna and Member of Parliament Lawyer Mr. Premanath C. Dolawatta were chosen as the Member of Parliament of the Year for their commitment to democracy and several other criteria and received the awards.
Institute of politics is a professional educational institute and all its courses and workshops are conducted by recognized university professors and professionals with expert experience in the field.
