An order from the COPA Committee to the Ministry of Foreign Employment

The COPA Committee has ordered the Foreign Employment Ministry and the Foreign Employment Bureau to prepare a more efficient program within two weeks to direct more skilled workers in Sri Lanka to foreign jobs.

The COPA committee has ordered to prepare this efficient program in conjunction with vocational training institutes.

When the COPA committee met to examine the performance audit report on the evaluation of the role to be played for the quality growth of the foreign employment sector, its chairman, Member of Parliament Mr. Kabir Hashim, gave these instructions.

The chairman of the committee mentioned that the Ministry of Foreign Employment and the Bureau of Foreign Employment will be called before the COPA committee to inquire about the plan of the related program.

COPA or the Committee on Public Accounts emphasized that although there is a great demand for skilled workers for foreign jobs, it is a serious problem that it is not possible to send skilled workers who meet the demand from the country.

The COPA committee further points out that this is due to the fact that the relevant responsible institutions are not operating on a well-coordinated plan.

According to the 2016 agreement between the United States and the Sri Lankan government, although the country has space for qualified nurses, out of the 425 nurses who had applied, only 3 nurses have passed the relevant language proficiency exam.
