Sources in the stores state that another stock of imported canned fish unfit for human consumption has been received by wholesalers in Pettah, Colombo.
According to market sources, there is a racket in foreign countries where fish that have been in deep freezers for more than three or four years are canned and sent to other countries, and Sri Lanka has also received the such stock.
Sources say that they are sold at a price less than Rs. 100 or Rs. 200 per tin than the price of tinned fish available in the market and that consumption of those canned fish may cause health problems.
The sources further state that fish tins unfit for human consumption are to be destroyed, but some smugglers are selling them to the public at a low price and this has been going on for some time.
