Go to the office by bicycle on the 8th

Dr. Asela Abeydheera, President of the ‘Suwa Diviyata Paa Padiya’ says that all citizens are requested to ride a bicycle from homes to their offices on the 8th of April.

Speaking on the occasion of World Health Day which falls on the 7th of April, Dr. Asela Abeydheera, President of the ‘Suwa Diviyata Paa Padiya’ said,

The theme of this year’s Health Day is “Our World – Our Health”.

Everyone in this country as well as around the world is currently facing a number of health problems. The main cause of many health problems is unhealthy human activities.

Air pollution causes respiratory problems, as well as poor eating habits, lazy lifestyles, overwork, and stress.

Excessive motor vehicle use has led to severe air pollution caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

Also, due to using of motor vehicles even for shorter distances, exercise is reduced and people are falling prey to non-communicable diseases. In addition, people have to face the consequences such as wasting money, congestion, and wasting time.

To get rid of this condition, people need to adopt an active lifestyle. Avoid using public transportation, cars, or motorcycles for short distances on a daily basis.

Using a bicycle can improve health, increase fitness, protect against non-communicable diseases, save money, reduce carbon footprint, reduce traffic congestion, and save time.

Many countries are now promoting the use of bicycles instead of cars. Accordingly, lanes for cycling should be reserved, arrangements should be made to protect bicycles and motorists should be made aware of the safety of cyclists as a matter of urgency.
