The verdict on prison officials who commit corruption and torture

A special telephone number has been introduced for prison inmates and their families to inform about the illegal activities carried out by the prison officers

Prison spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said in a statement that such information could be obtained by calling 011 267 8600.

The announcement further states that steps will be taken to protect the confidentiality of the information provided to this number.

Meanwhile, the Department of Prisons has decided not to consider reinstating officers who have committed acts of corruption and torture in prisons until their disciplinary inquiries or court proceedings are completed.

Prison media spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said that the decision was taken as retaining such officers would be detrimental to the welfare of the Prisons Department and the excellent service rendered by the majority of the officers in the Prisons Department.

It also says that if such officers are found guilty, they will be fired or severely punished.

The Commissioner-General of Prisons has taken steps to inform all authorities about this.
