Cabinet Spokesman Dullas Alahaperuma says it is important for President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to attend the UN General Assembly at a time when the country is under criticism at the UN Human Rights Council.
He points out that the President’s visit to New York and the visit of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to Italy are the first two foreign trips in a long time.
The 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA76) begins today (14). The President will visit USA on the 17th.
Despite the global epidemic, the summit was attended by leaders from many countries.
The first day of the debate at the General Assembly session is Tuesday, September 21, 2021.
In the past as well as in the future the government has stopped participating in many foreign tours and used technology to attend those meetings. The Minister said that only the essential foreign trips were made.
He stressed the importance of the Prime Minister’s visit to Italy at the invitation of foreign organizations and the President’s forthcoming visit to the United Nations, despite the current situation in the country, adding that “it would not be detrimental to the country to go with a small delegation to attend the UN General Assembly at this time.”
