In a media statement, the AMS expressed strong condemnation of the incident, stating that the doctor was attacked while on duty in her on-call room. The association emphasized that such acts of violence threaten the safety of healthcare workers.

The AMS urged the government to take immediate action to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Meanwhile, several nursing unions in the North Central Province have also announced their support for the protest by withdrawing from their duties today.

    President Meets Excise Officials

    0

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake held discussions today (11) with excise officials regarding the regulation of the alcohol and tobacco industries to enhance state revenue.

According to the Presidential Media Division, the meeting took place at the Presidential Secretariat. The discussions focused on the challenges faced by the Excise Department and strategies to meet this year’s revenue targets.

A key topic of discussion was integrating the operations of the Excise Department with the Inland Revenue Department to ensure efficiency and fairness in tax collection. The meeting also addressed several critical aspects, including:

    • Strengthening regulations in the alcohol and tobacco industries to boost government revenue.
    • Facilitating legal revenue generation while ensuring compliance with laws and regulations.
    • Implementing awareness programs to combat illegal alcohol, dangerous drugs, and psychoactive substance abuse.
    • Preventing health risks associated with unregulated alcohol consumption.
    • Enhancing the management and control of approved alcoholic products to support economic growth.

Further discussions were held on improving revenue collection and safeguarding state income through strategic operational and management mechanisms. The need for a human resource and technological development plan to improve the efficiency of the Excise Department was also emphasized.

The meeting was attended by Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumaranayake, Finance Ministry Secretary Mahinda Siriwardena, Excise Commissioner General Udaya Kumara Perera, and other senior officials from the Excise Department.

Last week, during a Parliamentary Finance Committee session, there was a heated debate over whether individuals using electronic cigarettes should be arrested. However, the statement issued following today’s meeting did not mention any specific measures regarding the use of electronic cigarettes, including their impact on schoolchildren.

Order Issued to Arrest Deshabandu on Sight

    0

The Matara Chief Magistrate, Aruna Indrajith Buddhadasa, issued an open warrant today (11), ordering the immediate arrest of suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon upon sight.

This decision follows a request from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to issue an open warrant for the arrest of the suspect.

The CID informed the court that they had already searched ten locations where the former IGP was believed to be hiding but had failed to locate him. Additionally, intelligence officers are currently monitoring 18 other locations where he is suspected to be in hiding.

Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal had previously scheduled a hearing for tomorrow (12) to verify the facts related to a writ petition filed by Deshabandu Tennakoon.

The Matara Magistrate had initially issued a warrant for his arrest following a magisterial inquiry into the death of a sergeant from the Colombo Crime Division. The officer was killed during a shooting incident in Weligama, Matara, in 2023, allegedly involving Weligama police officers in response to an attack by individuals arriving in a white van at the W15 hotel.

100 Days of the NPP Government: Promises vs. Reality

    0

As the first 100 days of the National People’s Power (NPP) government pass, a pressing question arises: What has the government accomplished so far? This question places President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and his administration under intense scrutiny.

The NPP came into power with a landslide victory, securing well over a two-thirds majority in Parliament—a result that signaled a dramatic shift in Sri Lanka’s political landscape. However, the high hopes placed in the new administration have been overshadowed by a series of controversies and challenges.

    The Ranawala Controversy

One of the most damaging issues has been the controversy surrounding former Speaker Ranawala’s academic qualifications. Despite public demand, he has yet to provide proof of his claimed doctoral degree. In a recent interview with BBC Sinhala, when pressed on when he would produce the necessary documents, Ranawala dismissed the question, asserting that it was not a matter of public concern. This response has only fueled criticism, raising questions about the integrity of the government and its leadership.

    Rising Security Concerns

A series of shooting incidents across the country some occurring within court premises have raised serious concerns about national security. Instead of addressing these fears head-on, the NPP government has downplayed them, asserting that the country is in safer hands than ever before. An NPP MP further redefined national security, stating that it refers solely to the government’s and armed forces’ ability to defend the nation from invasion.

Adding to the controversy, the President announced during the budget debate that the size of the armed forces would be reduced, arguing that this was necessary given current circumstances. While some see this as a strategic decision, others worry it could compromise national security.

    Economic Struggles and Unmet Promises

One of the NPP’s key campaign promises was to increase salaries for state employees. However, while the official salary figures show an increase, take home pay has remained largely unchanged. In reality, the promised salary hike will only take effect in 2027. This has led to frustration among state employees, many of whom voted for the NPP and now feel betrayed as they struggle with the rising cost of living.

    The Mahinda Rajapaksa Residence Issue

Amidst these challenges, the government has also shifted focus to the official residence of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Some NPP members have suggested that his eviction was imminent, at one point claiming it was only a matter of hours. However, as of now, Rajapaksa remains in his official residence, raising questions about the government’s ability to follow through on its statements.

    Fuel Price Controversy

Despite earlier claims by NPP members that a significant portion of fuel prices was being siphoned off by corrupt officials under the previous administration, fuel prices have remained virtually unchanged. This has led to speculation about whether members of the previous government still benefit from commissions on fuel sales or whether the NPP’s allegations were unfounded. If corruption was indeed the issue, has it persisted under the new government?

    Unaddressed Agricultural Concerns

The government has yet to take meaningful action to support paddy farmers, a crucial segment of the economy. With mounting challenges in the agricultural sector, their struggles continue to go largely unaddressed.

    A Disappointing First 100 Days?

As we enter the third month of 2025, the NPP government has yet to implement significant reforms or deliver on its major promises. While some argue that the administration is still new and needs more time, others recall how the 2015 Good Governance government enacted substantial changes within its first 100 days.

With that in mind, the public is left to decide: Has the NPP government lived up to its promises, or has it fallen short of expectations?

Court Summons Details on Deshabandu’s Writ Petition

    0

The Court of Appeal has ordered that details regarding the writ petition filed by suspended IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon be presented on the 12th of this month.

Deshabandu Tennakoon had submitted a writ petition requesting an interim injunction to suspend the arrest warrant issued by the Matara Magistrate. The warrant had been issued for his arrest in connection with an incident where a police sergeant from the Colombo Crimes Division was killed in a shooting at the W15 Hotel in Weligama in 2023.

Considering the request made by President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva, who appeared on behalf of Tennakoon, the Court of Appeal issued the directive.

Public Assistance Sought to Locate Suspended IGP

    0

The Sri Lanka Police have appealed for public assistance in locating suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who is believed to be in hiding, Police Media Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga announced.

A warrant has been issued for Tennakoon’s arrest, and anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to inform the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) immediately.

The CID has been assigned to locate the suspended IGP following a Matara Magistrate’s Court order in connection with the death of a Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) sergeant, who was fatally shot during an operation in Weligama to arrest a drug trafficking suspect.

Beyond the Mask: The NPP Betrayal of Its Own Promises

    0

The National People’s Power (NPP) is one of the strongest governments the country has ever witnessed. With 159 seats in Parliament, it secured a decisive two-thirds majority, making it the dominant political force.

However, that victory is now old news. The public is eagerly waiting to see whether the NPP will fulfill the promises that led to its landslide win.

It is evident that the NPP government has lost a significant portion of its support and is currently experiencing a decline in popularity. In politics, it is natural for any government to face diminishing public approval over time. However, the NPP is still relatively new, having been in power for only a few months. Yet, it has already shown worrying signs—making unwise decisions and failing to deliver on its commitments.

In the years leading up to its victory, the NPP pledged to create a corruption-free country and take swift action against fraud. Some of its members even claimed they would not hesitate to hold their own accountable if they were found to be corrupt or had misled voters.

With this promise, the NPP assured the public that it would introduce a new political culture. It urged citizens to vote for them, vowing to field candidates with strong educational backgrounds and unblemished records. Simultaneously, the NPP criticized other political parties and politicians for their involvement in corruption and for misleading the public. This campaign created a national discourse about the need to clean up Parliament and elect well-educated individuals. The movement was reminiscent of the 2020 ‘Viyath Maga’ campaign, which ultimately failed disastrously.

Amid these pledges and political rhetoric, the NPP won the 2024 General Election, giving millions of people hope for a fresh start. However, that hope was short-lived. The newly elected Speaker of Parliament, Ashoka Ranwala, quickly became a symbol of the hypocrisy that lay beneath the NPP’s promises.

Upon his election as Speaker, Ranwala claimed to hold a PhD and assured the public that his academic background would bring a new culture to Parliament. However, the opposition soon questioned the authenticity of his qualifications and demanded proof of his doctoral degree. Initially, the NPP and its supporters defended him, asserting that he had completed his PhD in Japan and would provide the necessary documentation.

Yet, days passed, and Ranwala eventually resigned as Speaker without offering any justifiable explanation or presenting his academic credentials. Months later, he has still not provided any clarification or evidence of his claimed qualifications.

In Sri Lanka’s democratic system, educational qualifications are not a requirement to become a Member of Parliament or even the Speaker. However, the irony lies in the NPP’s own promises. Their pledge to change the political culture has backfired far sooner than expected.

As someone who believes in democratic governance, I acknowledge Ranwala’s right to be elected as a Member of Parliament and even as Speaker. However, the NPP’s promises now raise a critical question: Were their pledges just another set of empty political slogans? If so, they have failed the public and are on the path to becoming yet another government perpetuating the ‘seven-decade curse’ they vowed to end.

I would like to ask the NPP: Where is the promise that they would take action against their own members if they were found to be frauds? Or does their supposed commitment to integrity not apply when it involves one of their own?

Furthermore, what action has the NPP taken against Ranwala for misrepresenting his credentials? Is it too much to ask the party to hold him accountable or at least push him to provide an explanation?

The NPP’s first major test has been a complete failure. They have either chosen to turn a blind eye or assume that the public, burdened by economic hardships, will eventually forget.

Either way, the NPP is losing its popularity faster than any government before it, proving that they are far better at making promises than keeping them.

    0

In a firm declaration against privatization fears, Minister of Power, Engineer Kumara Jayakody, assured that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and its institutions will remain under full government ownership.

“We have opposed the sale of these institutions long before coming to power, and our stance remains unchanged,” the Minister stated while addressing officers and employees at the Lakvijaya Power Plant yesterday. “Our commitment is to protect government dominance in the energy and financial sectors. 0

A principal serving in an acting capacity has been arrested by officers of the Anuradhapura District Criminal Investigation Division for allegedly leaking the Sinhala Language and Literature question paper of the 2024 Third Term Examination for Grade 11 in the Northern Central Province before the exam was conducted.

The suspect, identified as M.M.K. Rajapaksha (52), the acting principal of Athdathpala Rahula Vidyalaya and a resident of Thammannakulama, Anuradhapura, was presented before the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court yesterday (29). Following the hearing, he was remanded until the 31st.

Gotha Asanka’s Drug Trafficker Caught with Rs.70 Million Worth of Heroin

    0

A key associate of Gotha Asanka, a powerful overseas drug lord involved in organized crime, has been arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division in a special operation. The suspect was found in possession of 2 kilograms and 218 grams of heroin, valued at approximately Rs. 70 million.

Part of this heroin stash was discovered hidden in a house in Gothatuwa. In addition to the heroin, the suspect was found with Rs. 667,000 in cash suspected to be earnings from drug trafficking, two mobile phones, and a car believed to have been used for drug distribution. Furthermore, authorities recovered 12 motorcycles linked to the suspect, which are now under investigation to determine whether they were used for drug distribution or other criminal activities. Colombo Crimes Division Director, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Indika Lokuhettiy stated that investigations are ongoing.

The arrested suspect, a 41-year-old man, had mobile phones in his possession that, upon examination, revealed connections to Gotha Asanka, who is operating the drug trade from abroad. Gotha Asanka was previously arrested in India for drug trafficking and was detained for a long period in a prison in Tamil Nadu. However, phone records from the arrested suspect show that Gotha Asanka had been using a phone number registered in Romania. This has raised suspicions about whether he has escaped to Romania after being released from Indian custody or is still in India using a Romanian phone number. Police have launched an investigation into this matter.

The suspect’s house in Gothatuwa was searched based on intelligence regarding a planned assassination. Information indicated that a motorcycle at the residence was intended for use in the murder plot. During the raid, over 100 grams of heroin were initially found in the suspect’s possession. Further questioning led officers to discover over 2 kilograms of heroin hidden in the house.

Gotha Asanka is also suspected of being involved in contract killings, using former LTTE snipers for assassinations. Police are now investigating whether he continues to orchestrate contract killings from abroad. Investigations into all these matters are currently underway.

President Announces End of Duty-Free Vehicle Permits

    0

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced that duty-free permits will no longer be issued for vehicle imports.

Speaking on the matter, the President revealed that approximately 20,000 applications for duty-free vehicle imports had been submitted. However, he clarified that this privilege will not be granted moving forward.

He further explained that vehicle prices are expected to rise once imports resume next month.

The President highlighted that vehicle imports were halted for five years, during which the country spent nearly $2 billion on vehicles in 2018 and $1.4 billion in 2019. He also noted the impact of currency fluctuations, stating that when the exchange rate was around Rs. 190 to the US dollar, vehicle prices were lower. With the dollar now nearing Rs. 300, he warned that imported vehicle prices could increase by approximately 40%.

President Dissanayake disclosed that discussions have been held with the Central Bank to determine the allocation of dollars for vehicle imports. He cautioned that if all pending vehicle import applications are processed in February, when the market reopens, it could exert significant pressure on the country’s dollar reserves.

As a result, he emphasized in a television interview that vehicle prices are likely to rise initially due to these factors.

Government to Float Tender for 500,000 Machine-Readable Passports Amid Rising Demand

    0

A tender for the procurement of 500,000 machine-readable passports (MRPs) is expected to be issued in the coming days, according to authoritative sources. A committee is currently preparing the necessary documentation, The Sunday Times reported.

The daily issuance of passports has been increased to between 2,500 and 2,700, up from the previous cap of 1,500 to 1,800. This includes passports issued through one-day and regular services, as well as those processed at overseas missions and the Department of Immigration and Emigration’s (DIE) four branches.

The adjustment in the quota was made on the instructions of the Public Security Ministry to extend the use of the current limited passport stock. *The Sunday Times* reported last week that a surge in applications is expected, particularly from individuals seeking to take the Korean language proficiency test, who need a passport number to qualify.

Foreign employment agencies have urged the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) to ensure a continuous supply of passports for their clients, warning that persistent delays may prompt receiving countries to seek workers from other markets. In response, the SLBFE sent a letter to the Public Security Ministry requesting that around 200 passports be issued daily for prospective labor migrants. This demand is currently being met, according to SLBFE Chairman Koshala Wickremesinghe.

A tender for the 500,000 MRPs is expected to be announced next week, with a separate tender planned for personalizing the passports. Depending on the outcome, Sri Lanka may issue a new series of passports, following the previous shift from the “N” series to the “P” series.

The DIE is currently working through its existing stock of passports, but at the current issuance rate, this batch is expected to run out between July and September. A backlog of applications remains unresolved.

Meanwhile, the results of the previous tender for ePassports, awarded to Thales DIS Finland OY and its Sri Lankan partner, Just In Time (JIT) Technologies (Pvt) Ltd, are still being contested in the Appeal Court by losing bidder Epic Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.

In the interim, the DIE is using an emergency stock of 750,000 MRPs purchased from Thales to address the ongoing shortage of travel documents caused by issues with the mismanaged ePassport tender. These passports are being delivered in batches.

Justice Karunaratne is set to step down from his duties in the Court of Appeal effective February 1, and he will officially retire on June 16 upon reaching the retirement age of 63. The government sources cited by the newspaper revealed that the impeachment plans were abandoned in light of his decision to retire and withdraw from active duties.

Justice Karunaratne has informed all CA judges of his intention to step down starting February 1. Consequently, the government is now focusing on appointing a senior CA judge to serve as acting President of the Court of Appeal until his official retirement.

According to *The Sunday Times*, Justice Mohammed Laffar is the most senior judge in the Court of Appeal after Justice Karunaratne. However, President Dissanayake did not recommend Justice Laffar for a Supreme Court appointment, and he is also set to retire on June 18 upon reaching 63. The next senior judges in the Court of Appeal include Justices Udaya Karaliyadde, Rathnapriya Gurusinghe, and Dhammika Ganepola.

The government has also emphasized that the Constitutional Council (CC) holds the authority to independently investigate the conduct of any individual whose appointment requires the CC’s approval.

Meanwhile, a ceremonial sitting to welcome four newly appointed Supreme Court judges—Justices Sobhitha Rajakaruna, Menaka Wijesundera, Sampath Abayakoon, and Sampath Wijeratne—will be held on Wednesday in the Superior Court Complex’s main hall. Similarly, a ceremonial sitting for newly appointed Court of Appeal Justices Sarath Dissanayake and Pradeep Hettiarachchi will take place on Tuesday in the Court of Appeal’s main hall.

*The Sunday Times* also reported discontent within the Attorney General’s (AG) Department over the government’s decision to disregard the AG’s nomination for a recent Supreme Court vacancy. Although Additional Solicitor General Susantha Balapatabendi, PC, was nominated, his name was not forwarded by the President to the Constitutional Council for consideration.

In the High Court, Jaffna High Court Judge M. Ilanchelian, the most senior judge eligible for a Court of Appeal appointment, is set to retire today (January 19) upon reaching 60. Other senior High Court judges next in line include Kandy High Court Judge Sumudu Premachandra, Colombo High Court Judges Namal Bandara Balalle and K. Priyantha Fernando, and Trincomalee High Court Judge K. Prema Shankar. The AG’s Department has also submitted the names of Senior Deputy Solicitor General Lakmali Karunanayake and Senior Deputy Solicitor General Sudarshana de Silva to the President for consideration as Court of Appeal judges.

Several additional retirements are expected in the superior courts this year. Chief Justice Murdu Fernando will retire in July, while Supreme Court Justice Gamini Amarasekara will step down in June. In the Court of Appeal, President Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and Justice Mohammed Laffar will both retire in June, with Justice Ahsan Marikar scheduled to retire in April.

Sri Lanka to Launch Strategic Two-Year Plan to Boost Pharmaceutical Production

In response to mounting challenges in maintaining a continuous supply of essential medicines for the country’s healthcare system, Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has instructed the State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC) to take immediate measures to significantly increase Sri Lanka’s pharmaceutical production capacity within the next two years.

The Minister issued these directives during his visit to the Sri Lanka State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) in Ratmalana. He outlined the key issues hindering the steady supply of medicines, including a shortage of drug suppliers, unreliable deliveries from contracted suppliers, and global supply chain disruptions. These challenges have led to periodic shortages of essential medications in government hospitals.

During the visit, Dr. Jayatissa conducted a comprehensive review of the obstacles affecting the rapid importation of raw materials necessary for pharmaceutical production. He engaged with officials to identify existing weaknesses and emphasized the urgency of implementing strategic plans to enhance production capacity without delay.

Highlighting the significance of the SPMC, the Minister described it as Sri Lanka’s oldest and largest government-owned pharmaceutical manufacturing institution and a cornerstone of the nation’s public health system. He underscored its role as a vital public service that extends beyond profit-oriented objectives.

Additionally, Dr. Jayatissa announced plans to expand the state pharmacy network to address the increasing demand in urban areas across the country.

The Minister held extensive discussions with the chairman and senior management of the SPMC to ensure the institution’s vision, initially established through a gift from the Japanese government, is implemented more formally and transparently.

During his inspection, Dr. Jayatissa assessed the corporation’s pharmaceutical production processes, raw material procurement, research activities, and drug distribution systems. He issued specific instructions to enhance these areas, focusing on corporate social responsibility, laboratory infrastructure, pre-production processes, marketing strategies, and human resource development.

As part of his visit, the Minister toured various sections of the SPMC premises and held discussions with staff members to understand the challenges they encounter in carrying out their responsibilities.

The event was attended by SPMC Chairman Professor Jayantha Vijayabandara, General Manager Asanti Athuraliya, Deputy General Managers, and other staff members.
