Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has said that “the tragedy of the deadly game being played by the government is imminent and that the people should protect themselves from the government as well,” releasing a media statement.
He points out that despite warnings from the World Health Organization and even local experts, the government is pursuing an arbitrary policy.
Following is the statement issued by the Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa.
“Even though Sri Lanka is ranked 15th in the world in terms of horrific corona outbreaks, the heartless rulers have not yet heeded it. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that a curfew be imposed for a short period of time, covering large areas or territories, and predicts that if their recommendations are not implemented, the total number of COVID deaths in Sri Lanka will rise to 30,000 by January next year.
Considering the high risk of disaster, our experts warned that the country should be locked up for a short time or so because the lives of the people are more important to us than anything else.
The very fact that they have no sense of anything is a testament to the decisions they are making. Infected and death rates are just a gamble for them. Even the Government Medical Officers’ Association alleges that they receive unofficial reports of number of patients with corona infection exceeds 5,000 and that hospitals with more than 250 deaths, indicating that there are both official and unofficial reports.
Despite such a catastrophe, the government is still in the dark trying to put the blame for the corona expansion on the people.
No one can decide to keep the country open at this moment except someone who is ready to politicize over the deaths of the people.
The situation has taken a turn for the worse. It is a well-known fact that the people of this country have acted responsibly and the government has acted irresponsibly since the onset of the Corona disaster. The government violated and changed the quarantine laws at will, calling general elections, convening parliament for the 20th Amendment, bringing in tourists to test the corona projects, and calling the country “corona free”; The way they worked was disgusting. It is the innocent people of this country who are facing the tragic consequences of these arbitrary decisions.
Although the government accuses the people of claiming that 80% of those who die from corona and those who are infected have not been vaccinated, the government should be reminded that it was the government that did not import the vaccine to the country when needed and instead socialized the myth. The government has forgotten that it was the government that encouraged the people to go after the so-called ‘corona-portions’ instead of encouraging them to get the vaccine.
The government will not make a decision to close the country, creating a so-called fear of the economy. Nothing more can be expected from a government that does not understand what is more important than ‘economy or oxygen.’ Even the government should realize that even if a kilo of chicken can be priced in the market for a commodity, a human life cannot be priced in the market and it’s a waste of time trying to make the government understand the truth.
The government is ‘playing with lives’ as usual, discarding all the proposals we make in good faith and the suggestions of experts, including the World Health Organization, as a morning spit, and soon they realize how tragic the end of this deadly game is. Therefore, we again call on the people to “protect themselves from the corona as well as the government.” He says.
