The Election Commission has announced that if any disruptive activity occurs at a polling station during the voting or counting periods of the Presidential Election, the votes cast at that station will be nullified.
Chairman of the Election Commission, R.M.A.L. Ratnayake, stated that if such nullification affects the overall election results, a re-poll will be conducted at the affected stations. He emphasized that until this re-poll is completed, the final election results cannot be released.
This was highlighted by Ratnayake during a media briefing held this morning (19) at the Government Information Department regarding the Presidential Election voting process.
“If any disruptive actions take place at a polling station, and the returning officer at that station reports the need for nullification, the Election Commission will take steps to nullify the votes at that station. If this affects the overall election outcome, a re-poll will be held, and the final election results will not be released until the re-poll is completed. Therefore, we urge everyone to avoid engaging in conflicts at polling stations, violent actions, or any activities that could disrupt the election process. All security forces have been instructed to act strictly in enforcing the law. The police and the Special Task Force have been deployed to ensure peace, and the tri-forces are on standby to respond in any emergency situation.”
