Only Dilith attended the presidential candidate debate – Other candidates opted out

The public debate for the 2024 presidential election started yesterday (7), but the opportunity to hold a debate has been missed due to the fact that only one of the four candidates who were announced to participate participated.

Although it was supposed to be a multi-candidate discussion, the only person who participated in this was the presidential candidate of Sarvajana Balaya Party, Mr. Dilith Jayaweera.

The debate was organized by the March 12 Movement.

All TV channels and around 200 social media broadcasted it live.

Sajith Premadasa and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna candidate Namal Rajapaksa and Tamil common candidate P. Ariyaneathran were confirmed to attend the debate, but they did not participate.

However, the debate, which was delayed until the arrival of the other presidential candidates, then started 40 minutes after the scheduled time with only Dilith Jayaweera participating.

Dilith Jayaweera said, “This situation alone is enough to give your vote to me”.

Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe had informed in writing that he would not participate in the debate and Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayake had informed that he was busy.
