The National Election Commission has said that there is an opportunity to nominate a replacement for the late Mr. Mohammad Idrus Illyas, an independent candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
Its chairman Mr. RAML Ratnayake stated that the person who signed the nomination paper on behalf of Mr. Illiyas has the ability to nominate another substitute by submitting a death certificate stating that Mr. Muhammad Idroos Ilyas is dead.
Three days have been given for that.
However, since the voter mark and name of Mr. Muhammad Idroos Ilyas are printed on the ballot paper, it will not change, said the chairman.
Mr. Muhammad Idroos Ilyas, who was going to compete as an independent candidate in this year’s presidential election, passed away on the night of the 23rd.
He died due to a heart attack at the age of 79.
Accordingly, the number of candidates running for the 2024 presidential election is 38.
