Samagi Jana Balawega Member of Parliament Mrs. Thalatha Athukorala resigns from her position as Member of Parliament.
She made a special statement in Parliament today (21) and said, “On one side, our great parent party, the United National Party, is divided into two. Both the leader and former deputy leader of our mother party have become political enemies. Both of them are running for president. At a time like this when everyone else is trying to get together, I cannot agree with the decision to split our camp and compete with two people… I believe that the decision of the two leaders to compete on two sides is a selfish political decision made without thinking about the future of the country. History will prove that in the near future.”
However, she also says that she will never leave politics.
She is the sister of Gamini Athukorala, who was a political activist for 25 years, representing the Niwithigala Constituency in Ratnapura District and serving as the General Secretary of the United National Party.
She entered politics in 2004 after the death of her brother.
