The recommendation made by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to extend the tenure of the current Attorney General, President’s Counsel Mr. Sanjay Rajaratnam by 6 months has been rejected in the Constitutional Assembly.
The Constituent Assembly met on two occasions and on both occasions no final decision was taken in this regard.
Accordingly, yesterday (18) the Constitutional Assembly met under the chairmanship of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
A vote was held among the members of the Constituent Assembly to reach a final decision.
Accordingly, only 03 votes have been received in favor of the relevant recommendation.
Due to receiving 05 votes against it, the relevant proposal was rejected.
The term of office of Attorney General and President’s Counsel Mr. Sanjay Rajaratnam is going to end this month.
