Mr. Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of Transport, said today that since accidents occur due to slow moving vehicles, measures will be taken to impose a minimum speed limit on highways.
The minister says that the new rules will be published in a gazette notification within two weeks.
He recalled at the weekly cabinet decision notification press conference that although the maximum speed limit has been set at 100 kmph, a minimum speed has not yet been set.
He said that most of the accidents happen when passing slow-moving vehicles and it is important to fix a minimum speed limit to avoid such accidents.
He says that he held a discussion with experts in the field and relevant agencies such as the police regarding the accidents that occur on highways.
