The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has said today (Dec. 27) that it has admitted that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) was at fault in the recent power outage.
The commission said CEB was responsible for failing to restore electricity supply for more than 5 hours after the sudden major power outage reported earlier this month, which was a ‘problematic situation’.
CEB has said that due to lack of sufficient funds, it was not possible to maintain an additional power generator to be used in such emergencies.
Meanwhile, the Public Utilities Commission has emphasized that if the CEB is unable to find the maintenance costs for an additional generator, the public will have to bear the burden.
On December 09 at around 5.10 in the evening, a nationwide power outage was reported. It took over 5 hours for it to regain electricity. Electricity was restored intermittently.
The electricity board says that the reason for the widespread power outage is the breakdown of the transmission line from Kotmale to Biyagama and it was caused by lightning.
