A tragic incident unfolded at the construction site of the Henawala Regional Hospital in Yatinuwara, where one person lost their life after an old embankment collapsed during soil removal for the ongoing construction project.
The dangerous collapse occurred at approximately 12:00 noon while workers were engaged in the excavation of soil to facilitate the construction of a new embankment. Tragically, a worker became trapped under the fallen debris, leading to a swift rescue effort by fellow workers.
Despite the immediate rescue attempt, the victim, identified as 33-year-old Ranjith Abeyratne from Paranapettiya, Yatinuwara, succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident. The rescue operation took about 1 ½ hours as the worker was trapped between the stones and soil of the collapsed embankment.
Local authorities, including the Kadugannawa Police, have initiated investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. The construction site is now subject to scrutiny to determine the factors contributing to the collapse, with a focus on ensuring the safety of ongoing construction activities.
