A 35-year-old man who pretended to be a western doctor and ran a medical center in his home for three years and treated patients was arrested yesterday (22) in a raid conducted by the Anuradhapura District Food and Drug Inspectors and Public Health Inspectors with the assistance of the Galenbidunuwewa Police.
Investigations have also revealed that a large number of people come to seek treatment from this fake doctor who resides in Aliwanguwa, Anuradhapura.
This suspect is an A/L Biology student Faculty who has been selected for the Faculty of Ayurvedic Medicine. The investigation revealed that he was elected to the Ayurvedic Faculty of Medicine in 2015 and after training for two years, started treating patients as a Western doctor without completing his degree.
Investigations have revealed that the suspect’s mother is a person who has worked in an estate medical center, and through that the young man has gained some understanding about medicines, so he has got the ability to act as a doctor.
Information about this fake doctor has been revealed through a petition to the Inspector General of Police. Police information revealed that the Inspector General of Police has directed the Senior Deputy Inspector General of North Central province to investigate the petition and accordingly, an investigation has been conducted under the direction of the Police OIC in Galenbidunuwewa.
The district medical officer was the first to inform the police about this fake doctor, as there were legal obstacles in enforcing the law regarding such people. The police said that the medical center was raided with the help of the District Medical Officer, Anuradhapura District Food and Drug Inspectors, and Gelenbidunuwewa Public Health Inspectors.
Different types of medicines were stored in the medical center to be given to the patients. The police say that the law will be enforced against him as he should be registered to be able to store those types of medicine.
However, the police say that the proceedings against him are being conducted by the Anuradhapura District Food and Drug Inspectors, and the arrested suspect has been granted bail. The police said that steps will be taken to prosecute him on May 19.
