Eggs are allowed to be imported only for bakeries

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera says that eggs have been allowed to be imported and they should be used only for the bakery industry.

A discussion was held at the Ministry of Agriculture yesterday (16) under the chairmanship of the Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera regarding the import of eggs and future measures for the development of livestock.

The Minister has also mentioned that imported eggs should not be allowed to be sold in shops for general consumption.

The measures have been taken with the aim of preventing bird flu from entering Sri Lanka.

Also, in the discussion, the minister has instructed the officials to immediately prepare a series of guidelines regarding the use of eggs in the bakery industry.

Accordingly, the minister has further advised to use gloves when using the eggs in the bakery industry, to safely dispose of or destroy the eggshells, and to ensure that the remaining eggshells are not released into the environment at all.
