The Indian police have arrested 4 people of Sri Lankan origin, who are leading the ‘Thak Tak’ gang operating in India, which steals vehicles.
Twelve days ago, they were arrested in connection with an incident in which they allegedly broke the windows of a car and stole 5,740,000 Indian rupees from a car.
The police also found INR 4,650,000 in possession of these suspects. The police were told that the accused were living in temporary residences in Delhi and various other states and had committed various thefts in the past.
Indian Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu said that the police found these suspects by examining CCTV footage, who operated as a gang called ‘Thak Thak’ established in Madangir Colony in South Delhi.
He said police teams conducted joint raids at Anaj Mandi in Ferozepur and other places to nab the criminals.
Thieves appearing in court today said they did not expect the amount of money found in a bag they recently stole from a vehicle to be so large. Therefore, a suspect has said that he refrained from using mobile phones and other technical devices to escape from the police.
One accused, identified as Murgan, a resident of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, was arrested from Delhi, and INR 4,000,000 was found in his possession. Two others have been identified as Prakash and Suresh, residents of Madangir Colony in Uttar Pradesh. The other suspect has been identified as Suresh of New Delhi. Apart from Murugan, the other three suspects were arrested from Jalandhar’s Lohian area.
An amount of INR 650,000 was found in their possession. The police have also found a device like a catapult used for the crime.
According to police officials, the thak thak gang targets vehicles parked in markets and streets. If someone is sitting inside, they use various tricks to distract the passengers and steal the bags from the car, an official said.
Sometimes, if someone is inside the vehicle, they tap on the window of the vehicle and tell them that some money has fallen and asked them to pick it. When the person inside the car trying that, these thieves immediately steal the contents of the car in the blink of an eye.
Since 2018, thefts by this ‘Thak Thak Gang’ have been reported in various parts of India.
A number of its members were arrested, and after that, it was stopped for a while but has started to be active again from another location since last year.
