The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has issued a notice to the public regarding cases of fraudulent calls, text messages, e-mail messages and money fraud from individuals through social media networks.
The central bank says that rapid growth has been observed recently in complaints received regarding money fraud from individuals by giving false information through fraudulent phone calls, text messages, e-mail messages and social media networks by giving promises of referrals for foreign jobs or asking them to pay customs duties to receive parcels containing various valuable goods.
Therefore, the Financial Intelligence Unit emphasizes to the public not to deposit money into the bank accounts of unknown persons or remit money through other means for the above type of calls or messages without proper verification.
Furthermore, fraudsters engaging in such activities may request the following information from you to carry out related transactions.
- Personal Identification Number (PIN);
- Card Verification Values (CVV) used to authenticate payment cards as stated on the back of the cards;
- One-Time Passwords (OTP) used to authenticate transactions;
- User IDs, Passwords and OTPs used in mobile banking/internet banking;
Therefore, the Central Bank emphasizes to the public not to share such confidential information with any third party.
The Financial Intelligence Unit continues to urge the public to be vigilant about such scams.
Also, the Central Bank warns that by providing such details, you/ your family member/ your close ones will definitely become victims of financial fraud.
