Sri Lanka Cricket’s announcement on why Dhanushka was kept in Australia

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has announced that if the cricketer Dhanushka Gunathilaka is found guilty in court, a strict decision will be taken.

The relevant announcement states that the court proceedings related to Dhanushka Gunathilake are being closely monitored.

However, a group of cricket fans who spoke to NewsWave said that it is ridiculous that Sri Lanka Cricket is now going to closely monitor the court process without closely monitoring Dhanushka.

Dhanushka Gunathilaka, who only played in the match against Namibia three weeks ago, was removed from the rest of the matches claiming that he was injured, and instead, a substitute player was brought to Australia.

Even so, Sri Lanka Cricket has not announced why Dhanushka Gunathilaka was confined to a hotel room on a basis that he will not play for the rest of the tournament.

The announcement related to this incident has been reported on the Sri Lanka Cricket website.

The International Cricket Council has informed that the Sri Lankan cricketer Dhanushka Gunathilaka has been arrested by the police in Sydney on the charge of sexually assaulting a woman. Accordingly, it is further stated in the notice that Gunathilaka is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow, November 7th.

Sri Lanka Cricket is closely monitoring the way the court proceedings are conducted and Sri Lanka Cricket has stated that they will start a comprehensive investigation in this regard in consultation with the International Cricket Council. Sri Lanka Cricket further states that if Ganathilaka is found guilty of this, strict decisions will be taken against him.

Following is the announcement on why he was kept in Australia.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to clarify that Danushka Gunathilaka, despite being replaced midway through the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup due to injury, was retained in the squad as a “stand-by player.”

The decision was taken by the team management in consultation with the doctors and selectors, as Gunathilaka was fast recovering from the injury he suffered.

Hence, it was decided to keep the player with the team, as he had already acclimatized to the climatic conditions in Australia, and can continue to train with the squad with a view to immediately drafting him back into the 15-member squad should the need arise.
