“The country does not want a referendum”

Samagi Jana Balawegaya says that what the country needs is not a referendum but an election.

Its General Secretary, Member of Parliament Ranjith Maddumabandara, said this in response to the President’s announcement that a referendum would be held regarding a change in the voting system.

The President recently stated that he intends to hold a referendum after 6 months if the Parliament does not come to an agreement for an amendment to the electoral system.

Parliament member Ranjith Maddumabandara further said that a discussion about a referendum has been created to suppress the topic of holding elections.
