Some education sector officers are not retiring even after they turn 60

The Ceylon Teachers Union has alleged that a group of officials who have completed the age of 60 in the education administration service are violating the circulars and trying to stay in service for another 5 years.

Mr. Joseph Stalin, Secretary of Ceylon Teachers Union, said that the number of officers holding the highest positions in the Education Administration Service is about 100, of which only 38 officers are scheduled to retire at the end of this year and their retirement will not have any effect on the education sector.

He said that since there are a majority of officers who have the qualifications, they can be given the opportunity after the retirement of those officers.

Mr. Stalin also said that some principals who are about to retire have been working in the same school for many years and because they are unable to implement youth and new programs, the examination results of those schools have started to decrease.

He said that there are about seventy first-class qualified officers in the Education Administration Service, and since the principals have not been transferred, they have been facing a serious problem for many years.

Mr. Stalin also said that they should be selected according to the proper procedure based on the seniority and merit of the officers of the Education Administration Service who are currently working, and they should be given principal and other positions.
