    President seeks British assistance in the study of X-Press Pearl shipwreck damage

    President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has requested the British Government to provide technical assistance to study the damage caused to the Sri Lankan marine environment by the sinking of the X-Express Pearl.

    That was during a meeting between the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Sarah Hulton and the President at the Presidential Secretariat this morning (04).

    The High Commissioner welcomed the government’s efforts to control the corona epidemic and expressed opinions to support for the vaccination process.

    The High Commissioner also drew attention to the British Government’s contribution to the President’s efforts to build a trade economy.

    Ms. Halton agreed to exchange technical know-how and assist in the storage and transmission of solar energy required by the Government to obtain 80% of the country’s energy generation from renewable energy sources by 2030.

    The British High Commissioner commended the President’s decision to protect the environment by focusing on the use of organic fertilizers.

    The government plans to increase the forest cover from 20.8% to 30%. The High Commissioner also sought to provide the necessary knowledge and methods regarding the matter.

    Explaining the Geneva resolution, the President explained the steps taken by the government on other issues, including resolving land issues.

    First Secretary of the British High Commission Andrew Price, Chief Adviser to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Foreign Secretary Admiral Jayanath Colombage were also present in this meeting.
