US President Joe Biden confirms that Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed.
It was from a drone attack in Afghanistan.
He died in an anti-terrorist operation conducted by the CIA last Sunday in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.
Zawahiri has ‘plotted a path of murder and violence against American citizens. Now justice has been served and this terrorist leader is no more,’ said Biden.
Zawahiri took over al-Qaeda after the death of Osama bin Laden in 2011. He and Bin Laden jointly planned the 9/11 attacks and is one of the United States’ most wanted terrorists.
Zawahiri was on the balcony of a safe house when the drone fired two missiles at him, officials said.
Other members of the family were present but they were not harmed and only Zawahiri died, they added.
Biden said he gave the final approval for the ‘targeted attack’ on the 71-year-old al Qaeda leader after months of planning.
‘No matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide, if you are a threat to our people, the US will find you and pull you out. We will never waver to protect our nation,’ said Biden.
