Customs officers working at the Central Mail Exchange today found a stock of drugs worth over Rs. 130 million hidden in a parcel of bed sheets received by air mail from the Netherlands to Sri Lanka.
There were 13,640 pellets of drugs in the parcel.
The parcel had been mailed to the Central Mail Exchange a few months ago and had been in the custody of customs officials for some time due to suspicions about its address.
A customs official said that although the address was informed to come to collect the parcel, it was confirmed that it was a fake address.
The customs officer further stated that during the inspections of the parcels received through fake addresses, the drugs had been found in them and a large number of parcels from the Netherlands had been found with drugs in recent days.
The Customs suspects that the smugglers did not come to pick up the parcel because they knew that it was under the supervision of the Customs officers.
The drugs have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigations.
