    Railway reserved lands for cultivation

Cabinet approval has been granted to provide railway reserve lands for cultivation on a temporary basis.

Priority will be given to those who are already engaged in cultivation, residents near railway tracks and low income earners.

The statement issued by the Cabinet Office in this regard is as follows.

The total railway reserve land belonging to the Sri Lanka Railway Department is about 14,000 acres, out of which about 10% of the land has been leased out for various purposes.

Out of the remaining reserved lands, it has been identified as suitable to lease the cultivable lands which are not urgently required for the development activities of the Railway Department and are reserved as railway reserves in the vicinity of railway tracks and railway stations on a temporary basis for use for cultivation purposes.

Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Transport and Highways proposed to take necessary steps to grant the said lands on lease basis for agricultural use and use for a period of one (01) year, giving priority to the cultivators, residents near the railway tracks and low income earners who are already engaged in cultivation in the relevant areas was approved by the cabinet.
