The Navy found 543 kilos of Kerala cannabis suspected to have come from India by sea at the Periyapadu beach in Udappuwa.
This stock of Kerala Cannabis packed in 173 parcels was found by the Sri Lanka Navy on a patrol this morning. The value of cannabis is estimated at Rs. 120 million, the Navy said.
It is believed that the cannabis floated to the beach and the smugglers had abandoned the cannabis and fled to the sea as they were unable to bring the cannabis back to the shores due to naval operations. The Navy believes that the consignment of cannabis may have floated ashore.
The cannabis has been handed over to the Udappuwa Police for further investigations.
