The CID has arrested a youth along with the policeman’s firearm, who had assaulted a Superintendent of Police in Panchikawatte on May 09 and set fire to his car, and snatched his firearm.
The suspect is an 18-year-old resident of Maligawatte, according to the CID.
SP Nalaka Senanayake who was serving in the Negombo Police Division was assaulted by him. He is still receiving treatment at the hospital. He was treated in the intensive care unit for two weeks.
He encountered this incident while returning to Colombo from Negombo for special duties. Investigations by the CID have revealed that the group had surrounded the vehicle SP travelled and assaulted him, removing his uniform.
A senior police officer said that the firearm had been hidden in the suspect’s house in Maligawatte and investigations are underway regarding information that he is a person with links to the underworld.
