It is reported that the Ceylon Electricity Board has failed to pay over Rs. 23 billion for electricity purchased from private sector renewable power plants for 8 months.
According to the Local Renewable Energy Workers’ Union, small hydro power plants, solar thermal power plants and wind farms are being in the verge of shutting down due to the Ceylon Electricity Board’s failure to pay for electricity generated by them to the national grid.
About 7000 employees of private renewable power plants are at risk of losing their jobs due to the Ceylon Electricity Board’s default on loans, said its chairman Ruwan Prasanka.
Renewable energy plants have the potential to supply 718 megawatts to the national grid, he said.
Therefore, in order to protect renewable energy, the Ceylon Electricity Board should take immediate action to pay this loan and strengthen their power generation activities, he said.
Ruwan Prasanka said that it is suspected that the non-payment of tens of millions of rupees for eight months was a ploy to cripple the local energy sector.
