IGP comments on the arsons of MPs’ houses

According to political sources, Mr. C. D. Wickremaratne has spoken to ruling party members led by the President and said If I had been allowed to do my job, there would have been no arson or property damage after the attack on the 9th. That was at a meeting of parliamentarians representing the ruling party held at the President’s House recently.

The meeting was heated that day over the burning of houses and properties of ruling party MPs.

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa summoned the IGP to the meeting and the meeting became heated.

The IGP has been severely criticized by the parliamentarians for the failure of the police to control the attacks.

After hearing all this, the IGP had silenced everyone and said that such a situation would not have arisen if the IGP had been allowed to perform his duties. He has given examples regarding the appointments of OICs and SPs in charge of divisions. The IGP has pointed out that in all areas affected by fires and property damage, police chiefs are appointed under the influence of relevant politicians. The IGP has also taken steps to remind the officers that they are not suitable for the post.

The IGP said that he had submitted a letter to the government through the Secretary of Public Defense two months ago stating that such a situation would arise and he has emphasized that there are OICs who are unable to make a proper note in the police book.

According to political sources, everyone was stunned by the IGP’s statement.
