A youth injured in a police shooting in Angoda

One person has been hospitalized after being shot by police this afternoon after a group of people set fire to a bus at Angoda Junction and assaulted the Mulleriyawa OIC and other officers while preparing to set fire to a police jeep.

The victim was a youth and a resident of a nearby house, villagers said. Residents of Angoda and Mulleriyawa are protesting against the shooting of the youth who had nothing to do with the incident.

The bus was carrying a group of people who had arrived at Temple Trees from Kurunegala yesterday.

The bus was parked near a petrol station in Ambatale last evening when it was attacked and damaged by a group. Only the driver and conductor were there at the time. They too have been beaten and chased away.

A group of motorcyclists had stopped the bus at Angoda Junction this evening while a group of Army personnel were driving it towards Colombo in an emergency vehicle and had taken the bus into their custody. Among them were young women. The bus was set on fire when a group including the OIC of the Mulleriyawa Police arrived at the scene and trying to control the situation.

The rioters had attacked the OIC and other officers and tried to set fire to the police jeep. He was later shot by police.
