A father committed suicide for not being able to feed his children

An unfortunate incident has been reported in Welipenna where a father hanged himself due to not being able to feed his children properly for three days.

This was revealed during a post mortem conducted before the Welipenna coroner Nihal Jayanetti.

Nagaraja Ranjan (37), a resident of Helingbone Colony, Welipenna, a father of four has committed suicide, a senior Welipenna police official said.

Madasamy Manjula, 30, the wife of the victim who committed suicide, testified at the inquest that there wasn’t anything to eat at home for three days. She also stated that her husband was worried about that. According to the police, she had said that no one would lend her anything. She says her husband left the house last Friday saying he would find a way to earn money to buy food for the children and he did not come home that day. She said as there was no information about her husband, she sold two chairs in the house to feed the children that day and later found out that the husband had committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near a relative’s house.

Police say that they have four children under the age of 12. The deceased was a hired laborer. They had come to Welipenna about 9 months ago from Neboda in search of a job. They have been living in a room for a monthly rent of Rs. 3,500 and the children do not go to school, police said.

A study of police headquarters statistics shows that about 200 people commit suicide each year due to economic problems.
