A man has been killed in a clash at the Rustam Estate in Ratmalana over a dispute over the mortgage of a mobile phone for Rs. 2,000.
The deceased has been identified as Asanka Silva, a 43-year-old resident of Kaldemulla, Moratuwa.
According to Mount Lavinia Police, the victim was the brother-in-law of ‘Gona Kovile Roha’ – a member of a powerful underworld gang who was shot dead by police in Kochchikade, Negombo.
The victim, as well as the suspect in the murder, are three-wheeler drivers by profession. Investigations have revealed that the murderer is a drug addict and a relative of Kudu Anju who is a rival of Roha and currently operating drug smuggling and underworld from a foreign country.
The suspect was also worked as the driver of a former provincial councilor.
The murder had taken place yesterday and the police have managed to arrest the suspect today who had fled the scene and gone into hiding. Police have also found the knife used in the murder.
