Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Finance has stated that Sri Lanka should focus on locally manufacturing vehicles.
He was responding to a question raised by a journalist regarding the government’s stance on whether the ban on vehicle imports would be lifted in the future.
Minister Basil Rajapaksa has said, “Dhal should be brought before vehicles are imported. I will look into how to release a container of dhal by tomorrow morning. We will produce cars locally anyway.”
Meanwhile, President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has previously stated that the government will give priority to the importation of electric vehicles in the future.
The President made this observation while presenting the Government Policy Statement at the Second Session of the 9th Parliament of Sri Lanka on January 18, 2022.
