Reservoirs for hydropower generation are drying up

Engineers in charge of Castlereagh and Maussakelle reservoirs say that the water capacity of the reservoirs is further declining due to the extremely dry weather conditions prevailing in the western slopes of the central hills these days.

According to the engineers in charge of the reservoirs, the water capacity of Castlereagh Reservoir was 155 feet and by 6 this morning the water capacity of the reservoir had dropped by 18 feet and the water capacity of the Maussakelle Reservoir is 157 feet and by this morning the water capacity of the reservoir has dropped by 34 feet.

It is reported that with the depletion of the water capacity of the Maussakelle Reservoir, many of the ruins that were submerged during the construction of the reservoir are re-emerging these days.

Power generation at the Maussakelle Reservoir has been suspended for about a month due to maintenance work on a tunnel that carries water to the Canyon Hydro Power Plant, which generates 75 megawatts of electricity.

Apart from that power plant, the sluice gates of the Canyon Reservoir have been opened day and night for about a month to obtain water for power generation at the Laxapana, New Laxapana, and Polpitiya hydropower plants.
