    Price per kilo of rice increased – shortage is near

    The price of a kilo of Nadu, white raw, and red raw rice has increased by between Rs. 10 and 15 per kilo over the previous week.

    Accordingly, the price of a kilo of Nadu rice which was sold at Rs. 140 last week is now Rs. 165 and the price of a kilo of Samba rice which was sold at Rs. 160 has exceeded Rs. 180.

    The price of a kilo of white raw rice which was Rs. 120-125 has increased to Rs. 140 and a kilo of red raw rice which was sold at a price of Rs. 110 has exceeded Rs. 125.

    It is also reported that there is a shortage of rice in some areas.

    Meanwhile, the United Rice Growers’ Association says that there will be queues for gas, milk powder and queues to buy rice in the future.

    Its chairman Mudith Perera says there could be a huge rice shortage in the country by the end of next month.

    Accordingly, the price of a kilo of rice will increase to Rs. 300, he said.

    The United Rice Growers’ Association states that despite the government setting a price of Rs. 75 per kilo of paddy, there is not enough paddy due to the shortage of fertilizer.
