It is reported that steps have been taken to issue identity cards to Sri Lankan elephants.
The new plan will provide identity cards to more than 200 Sri Lankan elephants being kept under guard across the country.
This ID includes information such as the elephant’s DNA stamp.
This requires caretakers to refer elephants with IDs for a medical examination every six months or so. Regulations on elephant bathing and feeding are also in place.
The government has decided that all elephants should be registered so that their health, feeding, and other needs can be systematically monitored.
Many countries around the world, such as Austria and the Netherlands, already register various animals and use their identity cards.
It is estimated that there are about 7500 wild elephants in the country.
But due to human-elephant conflicts and poachers, elephants are rapidly becoming extinct.
