President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has decided not to give priority to the construction of new diesel and coal power plants in our country again – says Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.
President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has decided not to give priority to the construction of news diesel and coal power plants in our country again; President has informed about that for Cabinet said Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera.
He was speaking at the launch of the ‘Surakimu Ganga’ program yesterday (16) to remove weeds and other invasive plants that have grown on the river banks of Walawe Ganga and in the Kirindi Oya.
The Ministry of Environment has launched the Surakimu Ganga program with the objective of conserving all 103 rivers in our country’s river system. The Government has allocated Rs. 200 million for this purpose by the year 2021.
According to a survey conducted by the Central Environmental Authority on all over the 103 rivers, some low-income families living along the river system in our country do not have proper toilet facilities and dump their waste into these rivers.
ccordingly, Rs. 19 million has been allocated for the year 2021 to provide toilet facilities to these low income people. The Menik and Walawe river basins are set aside to provide for the construction of toilets for low-income families who are still living.
