The Pettah Wholesale Traders Association states that the importation of big onions has been temporarily suspended.
A spokesman for the Pettah Wholesale Traders Association said that the decision was taken due to the government imposing a tax of Rs. 40 on imported big onions.
He also said that the price of big onions will come down as they are expected to hit the local market by next week.
The spokesman said that due to the imposition of a tax of Rs. 40 on imported big onions, it was difficult to sell them at a higher price.
The wholesale price of a kilo of imported big onions today was between 140-160 rupees, the spokesman said.
