Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the subcommittee represented by him submitted the report of the sub-committee appointed on the salaries anomalies of teachers and principals to the Cabinet with the intention of making the teachers’ service a closed service soon.
“In fact, we as a government accept that the teacher-principal demands are reasonable. However, due to the current economic situation in the country, all these demands cannot be met at once. However, the government does not intend to continue to grant those demands citing difficulties,” he said.

As Minister Wimal Weerawansa presented all the information regarding salaries, I will not state the decisions taken regarding salaries. But in addition, we proposed a number of decisions that would affect all teachers and principals.
We submitted proposals to the Cabinet regarding 11 teacher-principal requests. One of the main demands was to make the teacher service a closed service. The Cabinet accepted the proposal. Accordingly, the Cabinet instructed the Minister of Education to publish the relevant gazette notification to make the teacher service a closed service before presenting the budget in November.
