“Port Authority prevents me from entering Port Police” – Sajith Premadasa

The Leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa said in Parliament today (05) that the Ports Authority and the Police had prevented him and MP Nalin Bandara from going to the Ports Police to visit the arrested teachers after the protest.

Sajith Premadasa pointed out that this was a breach of parliamentary privileges and requested Speaker Mahindayapa Abeywardena to issue a statement in this regard.

Our country has the rule of law and not the jungle law. We went to see the arrested teachera and principals. But we were not allowed to go. Sajith Premadasa said.

The Speaker informed that the relevant officials will be informed in this regard.

Afterwards, Ports Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena pointed out that the Leader of the Opposition should know that it is a common practice to obtain permission from the Ports Authority, the Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Customs when entering the Ports Police.

Mr. Rohitha Abeygunawardena said that if he had been given at least one telephone call, he would have been able to make the necessary arrangements.
