Opposition Reaches Consensus to Take Control of Local Authorities

“Final agreement will be made following discussions with our party” – Namal Rajapaksa

Opposition political party leaders have reached a preliminary agreement today (14) to establish control over all local government bodies—Municipal Councils, Urban Councils, and Pradeshiya Sabhas—where the National People’s Power (NPP) does not hold a majority.

The consensus was reached during a meeting held under the leadership of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe at a political office located on Flower Road, Colombo.

As per the decisions taken at the meeting, General Secretaries of the relevant parties are scheduled to meet tomorrow (15) to prepare the necessary nomination lists for the respective local authorities.

However, in response to an inquiry by NewaWave.lk, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organizer MP Namal Rajapaksa stated that a final agreement would be reached following further internal discussions within the party.

Apart from Namal Rajapaksa, several key political figures attended the meeting, including former Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, MP Nalin Bandara representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Nimal Siripala de Silva and Duminda Dissanayake representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa representing the United People’s Freedom Alliance, Palani Digambaran (National Workers’ Front), Mano Ganesan (Democratic People’s Front), Udaya Gammanpila (Pivithuru Hela Urumaya), Jeevan Thondaman (Lanka Labour Congress), Asanka Navaratne, Sugishwara Bandara, and Weerakumara Dissanayake (New Democratic Front), and several former MPs including Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon, Premanath C. Dolawatta, Nimal Lanza, and Mohamed Mussammil.

Representing the United National Party were its Chairman Vajira Abeywardena, General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala, National Organizer Sagala Ratnayaka, and former Minister Harin Fernando.

Former Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has been entrusted with coordinating these joint opposition efforts to assume control of the local authorities.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of future discussions with other groups opposing the NPP and working collectively to establish authority across local bodies.
