The lambda strain of the corona virus has spread to about 30 countries and Sri Lanka is also concerned because of its potential for resistance to existing covid vaccines.
Dr. Hemantha Herath, Deputy Director of Health Services, said that the health authorities were still collecting information on the Lambda variety.
Health officials urge the public to take all precautions, including wearing masks and maintaining social distance, to protect themselves from Lambda and all other Covid strains.
Minister of State for COVID-19, Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle has stated that although the Lambda variety has spread to other countries, no new health advice has been given so far.
Although the restrictions imposed due to the epidemic were further relaxed this week, the health sector urges the public to strictly adhere to the already active health guidelines.
The Lambda variety, or C.37, was first discovered in August 2020 in Peru.
Foreign media reports indicate that by mid-June, the virus had been detected in more than 30 countries, particularly in South America.
