It is proposed to introduce a package system in payment of electricity charges.
Also, it has been proposed to revise electricity tariffs only twice a year through a resolution prepared by the Sectoral Monitoring Committee on Energy and Transport.
It is also proposed that electricity produced by rooftop solar panels be added to the national grid as soon as possible.
It has also proposed to exempt import of solar panels from VAT.
Chairman of the Committee, Member of Parliament Mr. Nalaka Bandara Kottegoda said that these proposals are expected to be submitted to the Parliament within the next week.
The chairman of the committee said that the necessary proposals to reduce the electricity bill have been prepared.
Speaking here, the chairman pointed out that the average electricity consumer as well as manufacturing industrialists and export manufacturing industrialists have been greatly inconvenienced due to the increase in the price of a unit of electricity.
Accordingly, the electricity bill which was increased by 18% in October 2023 has been proposed to remove the increased percentage by 100%.
It has been suggested that the Ceylon Electricity Board is making a lot of profit due to the heavy rainfall and that the benefits of that profit should be given to the electricity consumers.
Also, the Chairman of the Committee said that he expects to convene and discuss the new Electricity Act with all relevant parties in the Committee.
