    Protests Near the Parliament as the 3rd Budget Voting Approaches

    The Federation of Trade Unions of Professionals is currently holding a protest near Parliament Roundabout at Polduwa intersection, demanding the revision of the tax policy proposed in the budget.

    As a result, there has been a heavy traffic jam in the Polduwa intersection leading to the Parliament and the surrounding areas.

    Union representatives including the Government Medical Officers Association, the Engineers Association, the Bank of Ceylon Employees’ Association and the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations are participating in this protest.

    A heated situation arose when the police informed the protestors to limit the protest to one lane only so as not to cause public distress.

    The vote on the third reading of the budget for next year is scheduled to be held today (13).

    Accordingly, the vote on the third reading of the budget will be held at 6:00 pm.

    As the Minister of Finance, President Ranil Wickramasinghe presented the budget to Parliament on the 13th of last month.

    On the 21st of last month, the second reading of the budget was held, where it was passed by a majority of 45 votes.

    Today is the 19th day of the budget committee debate or the debate on the third reading of the budget.

    The budget debate of the Ministry of Finance will be held and after that the voting will be held.
