A Reduction in the Electricity Bill!

Electricity and Energy Minister Mr. Kanchana Wijesekera revealed that the electricity tariffs are going to be revised next January and there is a possibility that the electricity bill will be reduced.

He said that due to the change in weather forecasts, there is a possibility of taking this step.

The minister said that due to the prevailing monsoon weather conditions, Sri Lanka’s electricity needs are still being met through hydropower production, so next year some relief can be given to the consumers.

“We have not had this much rain at this time in previous years. But now the daily rainfall has continuously increased. This has given us an advantage. We have been able to use hydroelectricity generation to the maximum. We have been able to stop our coal plants and other fuel and diesel plants we have.’ said the minister.

It was initially decided to revise electricity tariffs in April 2024.

However, Minister Wijesekera further clarified that a tariff revision will be made in the middle of January in order to provide some relief to the consumers.

Meanwhile, the Minister also said that he went to the CEB System Control Room on Monday to discuss the reasons for last Saturday’s islandwide power outage.

The minister also mentioned that the system control engineers and officials presented the events that led to the power outage and the steps taken to restore the power.
